Restylane Silk:  Natural-Looking Lip Enhancement in South Bay

fuller lips in torranceFuller, sexier lips are now possible without the “duck lip” appearance. Restylane Silk is softer, more pliable filler that has been specifically formulated for improvement of lip lines and thin lips. Now it is possible to achieve the ideal lip contour for your face with less risk of swelling or over-correction.

With aging, the lips become thinner and even without smoking, fine lines develop above the lip. Sun exposure, genetics and smoking can play a role in accelerating loss of fat and collagen in the lip area. Restylane Silk is an FDA-approved solution to restore the fuller and more youthful lips.

What happens during a Restylane Silk treatment?

Right before treatment, Dr. Goodlerner explains how and where the injections will be done and reviews each patient’s goals and preferences.

Since the lip area is very sensitive, we provide options to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. Most patients prefer a dental block, injected inside the mouth, which, after 15 minutes, provides complete anesthesia. Another option is topical numbing cream applied 30 minutes ahead. And, the good news is that Restylane Silk is formulated with lidocaine local anesthetic so after the first injections, reinjection in the same area is relatively painless. During treatment ice compresses are using to reduce the possibility of swelling or bruising. The treatment takes about 30 minutes.

What aftercare is needed?

Immediately after treatment ice and pressure should be applied to minimize bruising. After treatment, Dr Goodlerner recommends taking Arnica Montana, an herbal anti-bruising supplement for 3 days. At home, regular applications of ice packs for the following several hours is recommended. And, if you are having treatment for a special event, schedule the treatment two to four weeks ahead for optimal results.

What are patients saying about Restylane Silk?

In the clinical trial of Restylane Silk, patients had an overwhelmingly positive response.

  • 98% of patients reported a visible improvement in lip fullness 14 days after injection.
  • 76% of patients still had lip improvement six months following injection.

How much does Restylane Silk Cost?

Restylane Silk is priced by the syringe. For most patients 1 syringe is sufficient for lip augmentation and treatment of fine lines around the mouth. On average, Restylane Silk costs $600/syringe. The charges may be slightly higher in dermatology or plastic surgery practice vs medi-spas. Lip augmentation requires considerable skill and experience to achieve optimal results. And, if there are unanticipated side effects, such as an irregularity that doesn’t resolve, a medical practice has a doctor on call to answer questions. And, an experienced physician knows how to resolve any adverse effects.

Dr. Goodlerner has been using injectable fillers since 1984 when the first FDA approved filler, collagen, was developed. She is experienced with all of the products available today and selects the optimal product and treatment plan for each patient. Should any problem develop after treatment, Dr. Goodlerner knows how to treat and resolve it.

How long does it last?

In the clinical trial, investigators reported that 59% of patients still maintained lip fullness at 6 months. 76% of patients reported that they maintained lip fullness at 6 months. Juvederm and Restylane, which are made of the same ingredient as Restylane Silk, hyaluronic acid, last 6-9 months. It is likely that larger scale results over 3-5 years with Restylane Silk will have similar results.

What is the Science behind Restylane Silk?

Restylane Silk, like most FDA approved dermal fillers, is made of hyaluronic acid, a sugar that is naturally occurring in the skin. In gel form, it attracts water resulting in a smooth filling effect. The original Restylane was FDA approved in 2008. As a result, there is an excellent safety profile and considerable experience with this form of wrinkle filler and volume enhancer.

What are the common side effects?

Immediately after treatment common, temporary side effects at the injection site include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Tenderness

These effects typically resolve in 2-7 days

Rare, more serious side effects include reactivation of cold sores, infection and persistent bumps. Be sure to provide your treating physician with your complete history including: history of prior herpes infections and the use of medications that thin the blood such as aspirin, ibuprofen as well as prescription blood thinners. Pre-treatment with an anti-viral medication can prevent flares of herpes simplex. And, most persistent bumps will resolve.

Restylane Silk vs Other Dermal Fillers:  Juvederm & Restylane

All three fillers work for lip enhancement. For those with more severe loss of volume in the lips, Juvederm or Restylane may offer some advantages. Both of these cosmetic dermal fillers are slightly less costly than Restylane Silk. For patients with early or minimal upper lip lines and less volume loss, Restylane Silk is the best choice.
