The Fractional CO2 laser is a non-invasive laser resurfacing procedure that can improve the signs of aging on the face, neck, chest, and hands of both women and men

While the Fraxel laser allows for a shorter healing time after each of 4-5 sessions, the CO2 laser is done in a single treatment and works best for people over the age of 50. It provides a non-surgical solution for more severe irregular pigmentation, signs of aging, and sun damage.

The CO2 laser dramatically improves:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Irregular texture / rough skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sun spots, age spots, brown spots (pigmented lesions), and pre-cancerous skin lesions
  • Sun-induced redness (vascular dyschromia)
  • Acne scars or surgical scars (2 treatments might be necessary to improve scarring)

Dr. Goodlerner has provided a variety of laser treatments for her patients for more than 25 years. See the Laser and Light Treatment page for general information about laser procedures.

What is CO2 Laser treatment?

The CO2 is a fractional ablative treatment that resurfaces the top layer of skin. Fractional means that there are microscopic skip areas allowing for faster healing. Ablative means that the laser peels off part of the top skin layer to remove damaged skin cells and sends light beams to the deeper layers to stimulate new collagen.

The doctor scans your skin with a handpiece attached to the laser for one or two passes over the skin. During the procedure, you will wear protective eyewear. The length of time of the procedure depends on the size and severity of the areas to be treated.

Is the CO2 Laser painful?

A topical numbing cream is used, and most patients report that while somewhat uncomfortable, the CO2 laser is not painful. Any mild pain or burning sensations usually resolve the same day.

What are the results of CO2 Laser?

After 5-7 days, you will see fresher, smoother, glowing skin. As more collagen is produced in the weeks following the treatment, lines and wrinkles, scarring, and hyperpigmentation continue to improve. The procedure also makes your skin healthier and less likely to develop skin cancer.

For acne or surgical scars, the results depend on the severity of the scarring. Most patients receive 50-75% improvement.

Patient Lee G. of Redondo Beach had suffered with acne scars all of her adult life and had this to say about her CO2 laser treatment with Dr. Goodlerner:

I saw immediate improvement, and my skin keeps getting better all the time.”

How soon can you return to work after CO2 treatment?

Most people need to take about a week off from work and outdoor activities after a CO2 laser rejuvenation procedure. After a week of mild peeling, your skin will be pinker than normal and more sensitive. You may experience some mild itching and a feeling similar to sunburn during the first 5-6 days.
