Dr. Goodlerner was one of the first dermatologists in the South Bay to offer laser and light treatments, and she has provided a variety of laser procedures for her patients for more than 25 years.
Laser and light procedures are a non-invasive way to look better without the need for surgery and with a much shorter recovery period. These treatments address a number of issues, including acne and precancerous lesions.
Laser Treatment for Redness, Spider Veins
Lasers can be effective in removing small broken blood vessels or spider veins on the face, chest and neck. It works for overall facial redness due to rosacea or sun damage. Red birthmarks in children and adults can be successfully improved with a series of treatments, and it is occasionally used for touch-up treatments on the legs.
The V-Beam pulsed dye laser delivers a burst of light that is very focused on the red target. The blood vessels in the skin absorb the light and reabsorb into the body as part of the natural healing process. This treatment has proven completely safe, even for infants and children, and is extremely effective.
This laser can also work for brown spots or age spots on the face and hands.
For the removal of leg veins, however, Sclerotherapy is the gold standard method. Read more about Sclerotherapy injections.
What Can You Expect From Laser Treatment for Redness?
The treatment is not painful, but feels like a light rubber band snapping against the skin. After the procedure, the treated area will be redder than usual for 2-4 days. Brown spots look darker for a few days and peel off in about 10 days.
Women can wear makeup immediately, and no downtime is required.
“I had 4 treatments over 4 months – took away the excessive redness and really smoothed the skin overall. Very pleased with results.” Patient testimonial from Miriam
Laser Hair Removal
Dr. Goodlerner offers Laser Hair Removal for men and women with the GentleLASE System, an Alexandrite laser that safely and almost permanently removes body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin.
This system works on the facial and bikini areas, legs, back, and other areas of the body. The laser emits a beam of light that destroys the follicle, leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. Because pigment in the follicle is the target, this procedure does not work for white or blond hair.
The number of treatments depends on your skin color, eye color, and coarseness of the hair. However, everyone requires at least 6 treatments, as the process is only effective during the hair’s growing cycle. Repeat sessions are required to treat the follicles when they re-enter the early growth phase.
The skin may be slightly red and swollen after Laser Hair Removal, but this usually resolves within a day. For maximum safety, Laser Hair Removal should be performed at a dermatologist’s office.
Sun Damage, Rosacea, and Hyperpigmentation
The Fraxel Laser and the CO2 Laser can even out skin tone and reduce sun damage on the face, neck, and chest, including brown spots, age spots, sun spots, melasma, and facial redness.
The VBeam Pulsed Dye Laser is effective for redness, rosacea, vascular dyschromia, and sun damage on the face, neck, and chest. Photofacial with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Photodynamic blue light therapy are other treatments that can treat discoloration, as well as precancerous lesions (actinic keratosis). Dr. Goodlerner will advise which treatment will provide you with the best results.
Signs of Aging
The Fraxel Laser, CO2 Laser, VBeam Pulsed Dye Laser, and Photofacial with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), can dramatically improve the signs of aging on the face, neck, and chest. They reduce fine lines and wrinkles, shrink enlarged pores, and smooth irregular texture/rough skin without the need for invasive cosmetic surgery. During a consultation, Dr Goodlerner can advise which treatment will provide you with the best results.
LASER AND LIGHT TREATMENT FOR ACNE
Dr. Goodlerner is among the first in California to offer LED blue light therapy – a safe and cost-effective alternative to oral antibiotics or Accutane, which have potential side effects. Light therapy reduces inflammation in the skin and works with your medication to clear acne more quickly. It can work even better in combination with acne facials or peels.
The treatment causes a photodynamic effect that kills the bacteria that play an important role in the development of acne. There is no skin peeling, and a series of eight 20-minute acne treatments may have equivalent benefits to months of oral antibiotics. Acne also often goes into remission for 3-6 months after blue light therapy.
Most patients experience 70-80% clearing of acne within 2 months after 8 treatments during the course of a month. This treatment is approved by the FDA but not covered by insurance.
The VBeam pulsed dye laser can further reduce redness of acne lesions. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) combined with a 1-hour application of a light-activated medication and blue light therapy can decrease oil production, treat moderate to severe cystic acne, and reduce the development of new acne.
Dr. Goodlerner usually also prescribes home-based prescriptions for acne treatment, including formulations in her own skin care line.
Acne Scar Removal
Laser skin rejuvenation using the Fraxel Laser or CO2 Laser is effective for the removal of 50-75% of acne scars in most patients. For reddened scars, the VBeam Pulsed Dye Laser can reduce discoloration and also help to flatten raised scars. Read more about Acne Scar Removal.
