What is Sculptra?

Sculptra Aesthetic is a volume enhancer, rather than wrinkle treatment. It replaces lost collagen to restore a soft natural look. An average of three treatments sessions is needed to achieve gradual, yet noticeable improvement. Patients love the subtle, step by step improvement with minimal downtime. The main ingredient, poly- L- lactic acid, has been in medical use for many years in dis-solvable sutures and has been proven safe. Sculptra has been used in Europe as an anti-aging treatment since 2006; Sculptra FDA approval came to the US in 2009.

Why Use Sculptra?

Our faces don’t so much “fall” with time; and our skin doesn’t get looser. The face loses volume under the skin, causing a sagging appearance. The cheeks lose their rounded look and instead look flatter. The temples may look hollower. Volume restoration brings back the fullness of youth, improves symmetry and can ‘pick up’ sagging skin.  That’s where a dermal filler like Sculptra comes in.

Sculptra™ can be used torestore volume to hollow areas of the temples, cheeks, chin and under the eyes, as well as to define the jaw line. It is not recommended for use in and around the lips. Lips and wrinkles are best treated with other products such as Restylane Silk or Juvederm.

What Happens During a Sculptra Treatment?

South Bay Sculptra Before and After

Pre-treatment

Dr Goodlerner reviews your goals and desired areas of treatment. Some patients prefer to arrive early for application of topical anesthetic while others prefer applying ice packs just prior to treatment.

During the Treatment

The Sculptra treatment involves a few injections in each of the desired areas of treatment: temples, mid face, chin and jawline. The objective is total facial volume enhancement vs treating one facial area. This can be done without significant discomfort since local anesthetic (same as used at the dentist) is mixed into the Sculptra injection. The benefit, which relies on stimulating the body’s own collagen, will develop gradually over the course of 2-3 sessions space one month apart.

How Does Sculptra Work?

What Aftercare Is Needed?

After treatment, temporary swelling and redness is expected for a few days. Some patients may experience localized bruising or minor irregularities in the first few days. We recommend ice several times a day for 10-15 minutes as well as daily massage of the area.

What are the Side Effects of Sculptra?

Most side effects are temporary and consist of bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site. Rarely, small palpable bumps can develop under the skin due to clusters of the product. Typically these are invisible and resolve over time. The bumps can usually be made to resolve if they persist.  It is important to notify your treating physician of any irregularities that don’t resolve in a few weeks.

How Long Does Sculptra Last?

Results may last up to two years. Of course results vary from patient to patient.

How Much Does Sculptra Cost?

Sculptra is priced by the vial. Since 2-3 treatments are needed, many dermatology and plastic surgery practice offer packages of 2-3 vials. This treatment requires considerable experience and knowledge of facial anatomy. It is best performed in a medical practice by a physician with years of experience using injectables. Dr Goodlerner has been using injectable fillers since 1984 when the collagen wrinkle treatment was first FDA approved.  She has used Sculptra since it was introduced as a cosmetic treatment in 2009.

How Does Sculptra Compare to Radiesse or Voluma?

Sculptra results develop gradually over the course of 2-3 treatments. One vial of Sculptra may treat up to 3 zones of the face, while Radiesse and Voluma provide instant results and are better for a “quick fix.”  Radiesse and Voluma provide less volume per treatment. One or two facial zones can be treated. Radiesse and Voluma last up to one year, results can vary.  Sculptra lasts 1-2 years.  Longer benefit is attained after more treatments.

A consultation is the best way to determine which volume enhancing filler is right for you.
