Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Susan Goodlerner offers several dermal fillers (sometimes called wrinkle fillers and facial fillers) that can help you look years younger without surgery. These injectable fillers add volume to lines and wrinkles and stimulate the body’s own collagen.
Unlike Botox, which relaxes muscles that have caused wrinkles, dermal fillers plump areas that have lost collagen and elastic fibers due to aging. These fillers can improve:
- Nasolabial folds (from the nose to the corners of the mouth)
- Marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the chin)
- Thin lips (lip enhancement)
- Lines and hollowed areas around the eyes, such as bags under the eyes
- Lines on the upper lip and around the mouth
- Laugh lines
- Cheek definition
- Sagging skin
Each filler has its own properties for contouring the skin, Dr. Goodlerner will advise the best product(s) to achieve the results you want. In the hands of a skilled and trained dermatologist, you need not worry about looking “overdone.”
After filler injection treatments, you can expect to experience some temporary swelling, redness, bruising, and minor irregularities for a few days. Dr. Goodlerner may recommend daily self-massage of the treated areas, as well as the application of ice several times a day.
Sculptra is a volume enhancer, rather than wrinkle treatment. It replaces lost collagen to restore a soft natural look. An average of three treatments sessions is needed to achieve gradual , yet noticeable improvement. The main ingredient, poly- L- lactic acid, has been in medical use for many years in dissolvable sutures and has been proven safe. Sculptra has been used in Europe as an anti-aging treatment since 2006 and was FDA approved in the US as a cosmetic treatment in 2009.
After treatment, temporary swelling and redness is expected for a few days. Some patients may experience localized bruising or minor irregularities in the first few days. We recommend ice several times a day for 10-15 minutes as well as daily massage of the area.
Sculptra replaces collagen and enhances volume for a smooth, soft and natural look. Improvement is gradual, and most people receive three sessions. One of the many advantages of Sculptra is that the results can last as long as two years in some patients.

“The non-surgical facelift with Sculptra was the least expensive answer to my concerns (loss of volume and sagging jawline) with maximum results. I am absolutely thrilled when I look in the mirror!” –A.M., 58-year-old woman
“People comment that I look different, but they can’t really express what it is. Some say that I must lead a stress-free life. I assume when they say I look ‘different,’ people mean I look rested, youthful.” –BB, 60-year-old man
Radiesse is a soft volumizing gel that consists of smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres and provides collagen stimulation. It is an excellent choice for shaping and contouring the face, and is especially effective for smoothing deeper folds and frown lines. While results vary, the effects of Radiesse usually last 12-18 months.
Restylane is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid that acts like the body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid. (Hyaluronic acid is the glue between collagen fibers that occurs naturally in human skin. Since hyaluronic acid is not a protein, it is not allergenic, which means that no allergy tests are required before injections.).
Restylane injections works best on moderate wrinkles and folds, frown lines in younger people, fine lines around the mouth, and hollows under the eyes. It can also be used to add fullness to the lips. Results typically last 6 months.
This newer version of Restylane is first FDA approved product specifically formulated for lip enhancement and improving fine lines around the mouth. Like Restylane and Juvederm, it is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. Restylane Silk contains smaller smoother particles for more natural looking results.
Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid injectable filler similar to Restylane. Its consistency is a bit thicker, however, which makes it especially effective for plumping the lips and filling in the fine lines around the mouth. The results last approximately 6-8 months.
Juvéderm Voluma replenishes lost skin volume to regain a youthful appearance to the cheeks, cheekbones and chin.
Perlane is another hyaluronic acid filler that is injected deeper into the skin. It is appropriate for deep facial creases or for those patients who might require two syringes of Restylane for a full correction. Perlane generally lasts 6-8 months.
