Gel manicures have replaced acryllics as the most popular salon nail treatment. The gel is hard to remove , requiring soaking in acetone, which is known to cause dry and brittle naisl with overuse. And, the gel nails are set by exposure to UV light. Since the process is new, the skin cancer risk of the UV exposure every 2 weeks is unknown. Skin cancer, especially the more serious form, malignant melanoma can occur under the nail. Given the risks, I recommend intermittent use of gel nails – for special occaisions only.
